Generally speaking, people don’t rave about frozen yogurt, especially men. For good reason. The less caloric and less palatable ice cream alternative got some people talking with the bicoastal expansion of a couple colorful frozen-yogurt empires a few years back, and with the more recent openings of some self-serve joints, but on the whole you’d be right to think the hype is waning. Someone was probably upset as the original West Hollywood Pinkberry shuttered in April 2010, but most people came to realize: Ice cream just tastes better.
Except now there’s hope for frozen yogurt, and it comes from the ice-cream people. More specifically, Vermont’s most dependable ice-cream company, Ben & Jerry‘s, which has just launched a line of Greek frozen yogurts you can buy in a store, all of which we tried out yesterday. And we can report that they taste much better than store-bought frozen yogurt sounds. The straining process (what makes the yogurt “Greek”) gives them a creamy taste, one that’s even, yes, ice cream-like. The flavors include Banana Peanut Butter, Strawberry Shortcake, Raspberry Fudge Chunk, and Blueberry Vanilla Graham, plus a regular-old vanilla variety to be used for shakes and parfaits at scoop shops. Because this is Ben & Jerry’s, after all, and nothing is just vanilla.
