After having 15 novels already published, Nicholas Sparks isn’t about to slow down. The local best-selling author continually strives to give his best.
He’s done just that with his latest book, “The Best of Me,” which gets released by Grand Central Publishing on Tuesday. It took some time for Sparks to complete his 17th novel, 10 of which have been New York Times bestsellers and seven of which have been adapted into major motion pictures. However, the affable author said it was worth it.
“I’m really pleased with the way the novel came out,” Sparks recently said from the patio of his house in Trent Woods. “I think people will really like it.”
Sparks’ latest gem, “The Best of Me,” is a story about two small-town former high school sweethearts, Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier, who came from opposite sides of the tracks. Circumstances moved Dawson and Amanda into different parts of the world. Now middle-aged, the two are reunited in their hometown of Oriental, N.C., for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. The two are forced to confront the choices each has made, and ask whether love can truly rewrite the past.
“It was an exceptionally challenging novel to write on any number of levels,” Sparks said. “It was actually one of the more challenging novels I’ve ever written. I really struggled with this one on a lot of different ways. There were a lot of balancing issues that I had to play out.”
