A peek at the Moneyball movie

One of my all-time favorite players I’ve covered is Scott Hatteberg. The former catcher for the Red Sox and first baseman for the Athletics and Reds is far from a household name, but that could change.

Entertainment Tonight showed a clip from the movie version of Moneyball last night and promises more tonight.

If you’re familiar with the book (and if you’re not, you really should be), you’ll recognize that much of this clip revolves around Hatteberg’s story. The former catcher suffered a major arm injury and could no longer throw, but he did get on base, as the “not Paul Depodesta” character played by Jonah Hill tells us in the clip, and is therefore valuable to A’s general manager Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt.

Hatteberg was originally scheduled to play himself, but was replaced by a slimmed-down Chris Pratt, of Parks and Recreation. You’ll see Hatteberg’s homer to give the team a walk-off in its 20th straight win in 2002, as well as his struggles to adjust to playing first base, only to be helped out by future Rangers manager Ron Washington.

Hatterberg extended his career until 2008, when he was released after the Reds’ young first baseman proved he could handle the everyday first baseman duties (and has ended up doing OK). Still, Hatteberg’s an incredibly smart player who always had some insight into the game and I wouldn’t be surprised if he manages one day, but probably not until his daughters are a little older.

The movie is scheduled to be released Sept. 23. The IMDB page for the movie gives you some more interesting casting info, including Royce Clayton as Miguel Tejada.
