Mother of Michael Oher, inspiration for ‘The Blind Side,’ thrilled to see son win Super Bowl XLVII with Baltimore Ravens

By Sean Brennan

Talk about a ‘Super” day for the Oher family.

No doubt by now you’ve either heard the story or saw the movie, “The Blind Side.” It’s the story of Michael Oher, current Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle, who was born to a crack-addicted mother, bounced around foster care for several years before finally being adopted by the Tuohy family of Memphis. The Tuohy’s helped steer Michael’s life in a completely different direction, one culminating with a Super Bowl victory over the 49ers on Sunday in New Orleans.

“I came so far from nothing to a Super Bowl champion. I’m in shock right now,” Oher told ABC’s Good Morning America.

While Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is widely considered to be the happiest Raven of them all after his MVP performance likely gave the free-agent-to-be a little leverage come contract time, it would be tough to top the euphoria felt by Denise Oher.

Denise Oher is Michael’s biological mother and Sunday she watched her son win the Super Bowl while attending a party in downtown Memphis.

“I’m excited,” Denise Oher told Memphis’ Fox 19. “I knew he was going to be successful in sports.”

But Michael’s victory in New Orleans Sunday wasn’t the only reason for the Oher family to celebrate — Denise Oher said she is now living a clean and sober life.

“One day at a time,” Denise Oher said. “It took a long time to learn what that term meant. Today I’m clean with the help of the good Lord that’s where I’m going to stay.”

Denise Oher said she is very grateful that Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy adopted her son and set him on the path to a better life.

“I’m proud of him, I love him and I’m going to give God all that praise for his success,” Denise Oher said.

While Denise Oher said she has never seen “The Blind Side,” (she already knows how it ends, right?), the actress who played Oher’s adopted mother Leigh Anne, Sandra Bullock, was at the Superdome to watch Michael in the big game along with the entire Tuohy family. Bullock, who won an Oscar for her role in the film, brought along her son, Louis, who wore a purple Oher No. 74 Ravens jersey to the game. ♦
