Aaron Miller

President of Seeds of Peace, Middle East expert & former State Department negotiator

After a brilliant career in the State Department, where he served as an advisor to six secretaries of state on Arab-Israeli negotiations, Aaron Miller became the President of Seeds of Peace in 2003.

Seeds of Peace, a nonprofit, non-political organization, is dedicated to preparing teenagers from areas of conflict with the leadership skills required to promote coexistence and reconciliation. Participants are drawn primarily from the Middle East, but also from South Asia, the Balkans, and Cyprus. The entry point for the Seeds of Peace program is its international camp in Maine where up to 500 teenagers come each summer to work with professional facilitators and staff. Follow-up programming is conducted year-round at the Seeds of Peace Center for Coexistence in Jerusalem, programming in South Asia and year-round conferencing. Teenagers participate in the program from the age of fourteen through their university years. A parallel program operates year-round for the delegation leaders, the adult educators who accompany the young people to camp.

With more than two decades of service in the Department of State, where he advised six secretaries of state, Miller brings a wealth of experience on U.S. policy on the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli peace process. He participated in all U.S. sponsored Arab-Israeli negotiations over the last quarter century. His last position was Senior Advisor for Arab-Israeli Negotiations.

At the podium, Miller speaks about Seeds of Peace and the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict, the history of the conflict and the continuing efforts to negotiate a solution.

Miller received his Ph.D. in American Diplomatic and Middle East History from the University of Michigan in 1977 and joined the State Department the following year. Over the course of 25 years in the State Department, he served as the Deputy Special Middle East Coordinator for Arab-Israeli negotiations, Senior Member of the State Department?s Policy Planning Staff, in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research and in the Office of the Historian.
