Samuel Intrator
Renowned spiritual leader & founder of Kavanah Life
Rabbi Samuel Intrator is the former rabbi of the Carlebach Shul in New York City, and a renowned young spiritual teacher. In practice and message, Intrator crosses the boundaries between Jewish denominations to reveal a common heritage as the source of the Jewish tradition. In his words, ?Judaism today needs to get down to its roots and not be divided by its branches.?
Intrator is compiling material for a series of prayer books that will provide relevant commentaries on Jewish prayers and rituals. Discovering a wealth of commentaries filled with contemporary relevance hidden in the Jewish traditions, Intrator combines Kabbalistic, Talmudic and Hasidic teachings, as well as ethical and psychological insights, to provide meaning that is not available to most Jews today.
To realize his vision, Intrator established Kavanah Life, a non-profit outreach organization dedicated to raising Jewish spiritual consciousness in prayer and ritual. The goal of Kavanah Life is to bring modern understanding to ancient Jewish customs, because Intrator believes that ?praying by rote and performing rituals mechanically is plaguing the Jewish people, regardless of denomination.?
Touching people of all faiths, from all backgrounds and denominations, Intrator has led hundreds of weekend and scholar-in-residence programs all over the world. Incorporating song and dance with worship, he has inspired thousands to feel connected to their spiritual roots. Intrator?s presentations reveal a Judaism that is user-friendly, authentic, inspiring, alive and deeply spiritual.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland to Holocaust survivors, Intrator?s early education included and old world cheder as well as day school studies at the Talmudic Academy. He later studied at Ner Israel Rabbinical College, Yeshiva Derech Chaim and Yeshivat Kol Yaacov, where he received his rabbinic ordination. Intrator also received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. After earning a degree in political science, Intrator worked for the New York City Council for sixteen years.
For nearly two decades, Intrator was one of the closest aides and disciples of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, and upon the rabbi?s death became the leader of the great spiritual figure?s synagogue (known as the Carlebach Shul). During the six years of Intrator?s spiritual leadership at the shul, and through his warm, fervent teaching, Intrator expanded and deepened the shul in every way. He left the synagogue to lecture and lead inspirational spiritual programs.
