Parag Khanna
Economic Foreign Policy Expert
Exclusive Representation by Greater Talent Network
Designated a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum and one of Esquire’s “75 Most Influential People for the 21st Century,” Parag Khanna has his finger on the pulse of our geopolitical and economic future. The Director of the Global Governance Initiative and Senior Research Fellow at the New America Foundation, he is one of the nation’s most respected experts on global trends, economics and politics. His groundbreaking work The Second World: How Emerging Powers are Redefining Global Competition in the 21st Century (Random House, 2008) has been hailed by Robert Kaplan as “a savvy, streetwise primer on dozens of individual countries that adds up to a coherent theory of global politics.”
The Second World delves into today’s geopolitical marketplace, exploring America’s slip from dominance, the rise of the Europe and China as rival models for global leadership, and the emergence of the strategic ‘second world’ markets and how they affect globalization. With razor-sharp analysis, Khanna provides a road map for the U.S. to renew our competitiveness and avoid slipping into second world status. The Second World has quickly become a renowned textbook for undergraduate and graduate studies in foreign policy and global economics.
With plans for a new book on the future of diplomacy among governments, corporations and NGOs, Khanna continues to expand on The Second World with a comprehensive analysis of the global financial crisis. His extensive travel writing offers direct observation of emerging markets, and his work is published in dozens of publications from The New York Times and Financial Times to the Lebanese Daily Star and India Today. He is often featured on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera International, National Public Radio (NPR) and MTV, and international channels in Germany and India. Named at the top of Wired magazine’s 2008 “Smart List,” Khanna is a sought after commentator on foreign policy, globalization and economic trends.
At the podium, Khanna shares his insights from The Second World, including perspectives on the financial crisis and opportunities to recover from international economic meltdown. He explores the highly dynamic investment environment, assessing how U.S. multinationals can find an edge in emerging markets and vice versa. Khanna shares his insights gleaned over years spent traveling to over 40 countries in a program with equal take away value for business leaders, politicians, journalists, academics and students. Providing real-time assessments of the world’s geopolitical landscape, Khanna offers tailored strategies for both business and government leaders to employ.
During 2007 Khanna served as a senior advisor to United States Special Operations Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prior to joining New America he was the Global Governance Fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2002-6, and worked for five years at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, specializing in risk analysis, multi-stakeholder partnerships, and shaping the annual Davos agenda. He has also been a researcher at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, conducting projects on terrorism, conflict resolution in Central Asia, U.S. policy towards South Asia and defense policy.
Khanna holds a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs and a minor in Philosophy from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, a Masters Degree from Georgetown’s Security Studies Program, and is earning a PhD in International Relations at the London School of Economics. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Explorers Club. He speaks German, Hindi, French, Spanish, and basic Arabic.
