Douglas Coupland

Best-selling author of "Generation X" and "microserfs"

It doesn't matter where society goes - Douglas Coupland always manages to get there first. A chameleon of reinvention, Coupland brought us the X-generation revolution in the early 1990's, he chronicled the Wired Revolution in the mid-1990's, and he spearheaded the design revolution of the year 2000. Coupland is the author of nine novels and several non-fiction books in 35 languages with millions of copies in print.

Coupland created one of the hottest reads in corporate America with his best selling novel microserfs. Reinventing himself as a futurist of great humor and insight, he explored Microsoft, the cult of the computer and the shockwaves of the digital revolution. An international hit, this thought provoking look at tech-life in the 90's was cited by The New York Times as one of the nation's top selling business books.

His released his latest novel "The Gun Thief" to widespread critical acclaim. A TV series based on his previous novel, "jPod," is currently running on the Canadian Brodcasting Corporation network.

At the podium, Coupland offers a fresh perspective on the world around us and delivers a vision of the future by taking a look into the past. His inspiration came from a hotel stay where spittoons decorated the rooms. Intrigued by the thought of spittoons being a socially acceptable behavior at one point in time, Coupland applied this thought to the today's environment, sparking the realization that everything around us is a spittoon in some way. His captivating program will give you valuable insight into the future as well as an illuminating look at the present. Clearly, Coupland doesn't use pie charts or bar graphs when discussing the future, and audiences are absorbed by his deadpan style and wit.

AT A GLANCE: Douglas Coupland was born on December 30, 1961 on a Canadian NATO base in Baden-Baden, Germany, and grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver, Canada. He has studied sculpture and industrial design in Vancouver, Milan and Sapporo, Japan, and also has a degree in Japanese Business Science from studies in Honolulu and Tokyo.

He has written and performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England, and in 2001 resumed his practice as a visual artist, with exhibitions in spaces in North America, Europe and Asia.

Coupland never set out to be a writer, and always saw himself as working with his hands. It was by accident he began writing in the late 1980s, and only recently has he again begun working in sculpture and design. "In the end," he says, "everything's an art supply - wood, paint or words." His six novels have all been international best-sellers, critically well received and have, like himself, matured since 1991's Generation X globally redefined youth culture.

In addition to his much talked-about books, Coupland contributes to The New York Times, ArtForum, and Wired. He lives and writes in Vancouver, Canada.
