Christy Haubegger
Celebrated entrepreneur & founder of Latina magazine
The visionary founder of Latina, the first bilingual magazine targeted exclusively to Hispanic women in the U.S., Christy Haubegger is widely regarded as a leading business figure and opinion maker on Latino issues throughout the nation. Her indomitable spirit, relentless persistence and unerring business sense have infused Latina, and American publishing in general, with a unique and long overdue voice - a voice that attracts readers and advertisers in great numbers. With a mandate to provide updated images and a national voice for America's 35 million Hispanics, Haubegger is now working with her company, Latina Media Ventures, to develop vehicles in other media, including television and the Internet. She is also Executive Producer of the newly released and highly-acclaimed Spanglish, a movie exploring cultural, racial and socioeconomic divides between the characters, and the ways in which they strive to resolve them.
At the podium, Haubegger delivers her inspiring success story of a life-long dream that she built into a viable and vibrant enterprise. Forming the idea for Latina when she was 10, Haubegger overcame the double obstacles of being Hispanic and female in corporate America. She shares the practical business outlook and believe-in-yourself determination that enabled her to make her vision a reality. Her presentation also provides expansive insight into the thriving Hispanic market and encourages men and women in the audience to pursue their dreams.
Since the launch of Latina in 1996, Haubegger has received numerous honors. In January 2001, she was named one of Newsweek's "Women of the New Century." Hispanic Business Magazine named her one of the "100 Most Influential Hispanics in the U.S. in 2000. She also was one of Advertising Age's "Women to Watch" in 2000. NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw profiled her as one of "Ten Most Inspirational Women" and she has also been profiled in other media, including Mediaweek, The Los Angeles Times, Glamour and CNN.
Haubegger's idea for a magazine designed exclusively for the Hispanic market began to take shape when, as a teen growing up in a middle class neighborhood in Houston, she noticed a lack of images and information in women's magazines that related to her experiences as a Mexican-American. At Stanford Law School, she joined the editorial staff of the Stanford Law Review, rising to the position of senior editor. She also took a marketing course and, when assigned the task of writing a business plan, put her dream down on paper. Her professor was so impressed he urged her to pursue the venture.
After receiving her law degree, Haubegger set out to create her magazine: a bilingual publication that would serve as a source of information and provide positive images for Hispanic women who, like herself, live between two cultures and two languages. After months of knocking on doors, Haubegger convinced the publishers of Essence magazine, the largest publication for African-American women, that a significant segment of the population was being underserved by American media. More importantly, Haubegger's plan made clear the Hispanic population's spending power and willingness to support products that speak to their experience in the U.S. Her success is proving her right.
Haubegger is a Mexican-American native of Houston, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School.
