Marine geophysicist & discoverer of Titanic wreckage
Best known for his discovery of the Titanic wreckage, Dr. Robert Ballard has been delving into the farthest reaches of the sea for more than 40 years and is recognized as one of the premier spokesmen for marine research. A legendary explorer, experienced leader, best-selling author and former television show host, Dr. Ballard has led a life as exciting and intriguing as his deep-sea explorations. He has conducted more than 100 deep-sea expeditions, and his other discoveries include the German battleship Bismarck, 11 warships from the lost fleet of Guadalcanal and the luxury liner Lusitania.
Dr. Ballard is founder and head of the Institute for Exploration in Mystic, Connecticut where he specializes in deep-sea archeology. For 30 years, he served as a senior scientist and director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Center for Marine Exploration. Dr. Ballard also brought live and interactive exploration of the ocean floor to elementary school children through the JASON Project. He believed that enabling students and their teachers to do field work from the classroom was a powerful concept. A National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Ballard has published more than 50 scientific articles, a dozen National Geographic articles, and 16 books .
